Description: The University of the Free State (UFS) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Plant Sciences. The post-doctoral fellowship is available to support activities in the discipline of Plant Pathology. The research area focuses on diseases associated with summer grains, particularly soybean and sunflower, their management, and epidemiology. The successful applicant will engage in full-time post-doctoral research under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Rothmann in the Division of Plant Pathology.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in vitro and in vivo trials for disease control agents
  • Assist with disease surveillance, diagnosis, and identification
  • Coordinate with collaborators on research projects
  • Document and report research activities and findings
  • Data analysis and statistical programming
  • Supervise post-graduate research
  • Identify funding sources
  • Develop internal and external networks
  • Undertake national/international visits

Minimum Requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in Plant Pathology obtained in the last five years
  • Valid South African or international driver's license
  • Must be based at the Bloemfontein campus
  • Willingness to register with SACNASP or similar

Competencies: Comprehensive applications are invited, including a PhD degree in Plant Pathology, letter of motivation, CV, academic referees, academic transcripts, and academic writing sample.

Value of the Fellowship:

  • R 240,000 annual fellowship
  • R 30,000 additional research expenses fund
